Well, actually, I have a new project in mind now that Small Nyberg is a bit older, but I couldn't leave the book behind when I'm so close to being done!

In the afterword, Jansen starts by pointing out that most people are dissatisfied with their current jobs, but that countless people have made the leap to better positions. She tells a few stories about people who completely shifted gear as evidence that it can, in fact, be done!

Overall, I suspect this book is pretty dated for the current job market, but if you're a professional, and the title of the book applies to you, it might be worth checking out! Definitely get the most recent edition possible; maybe it'll turn out to be even more useful than this one!
You can probably guess why.

Everything is going well, and I'm going ts start trying to post again. but it's going to be a lot more sporadic than I'd prefer for the foreseeable future.

I doubt you want to hear about the mundane stuff (he's rolling over; he loves rice cereal; he gave his littler second-cousin kisses). I can't promise I won't poke into mommy-blog territory, but that's never been my focus and I don't plan to change that.

So, that's me! What have you been up to?

Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05286929297833328170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7591067937119692960.post-31813372623247151032016-05-03T19:38:00.000-04:002016-05-03T19:38:02.491-04:00What makes you happy? #62When I was a kid, the church my family belonged to had a craft fair, or Christmas bazaar, I don't recall which. I mean, they definitely had both at different points, but I don't recall which this specific event was.

There were several items for sale that people worked on in groups. Some were fairly simple, though extremely well done -- clothespin reindeer, tongue depressor Santas.

Bunny rabbit, dressed for Spring. Photo by me.

My favorite was the Seasonal Bunny Rabbit.

(It was also available as an Elephant.)

One or two people good with woodcrafts made the bodies, while people better with sewing made bulk collections of ears in different floral and holiday patterns.

Extra ears and ribbons. Photo by me.

Each rabbit (or elephant) came with a set of ears and some coordinating ribbons to tie around their necks.

And once a month, now that I have one of my own, I change the ears and ribbons to match season.

It's just a fun, subtle little thing that I really enjoy.

It's not like my gestating body couldn't use the calcium, protein, better sugars and fats (that is, calories), and whatever small amounts of fruit or antioxidants show up.

The Shake Shack in Madison Square Park, Manhattan, New York City (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

But lately, milkshakes have really hit the spot.

For a while, early on, cheeseburgers were one of my dietary staples. If I got them in their simpler forms, without onions, there were no food aversions (I had so many food aversions). I was getting protein and calories that I was otherwise missing out on. They tasted good, they stayed down, and enough different places sell them that I could have them a couple times a week without getting bored.

I'm lucky (?) enough to have a Five Guys in walking distance and a Shake Shack right where I usually transfer buses. I can get some good burgers easily.

And when my appetite came back, it came roaring back, and while I had burgers less often, I started pairing them with shakes.

Small Nyberg is starting to get big enough to encroach on my stomach, so I may have to scale back soon, but man. A good milkshake, well-timed, really satisfies.

Chapter 12: Job Search -- the Nuts and Bolts

Job Search Myths

Yeah, it's been a while, But there's not that much of the book left; let's see how quickly we can hammer it out.

Jansen outlines seven myths about job hunting:

A resume should only be one page.

If you got an interview through a third party, you follow up with the person who interviewed you, but rather with your recruiter.

No matter how many people interviewed you, you only need to send a thank-you note to the person who would be your direct report.

You shouldn't take notes during an interview.

Don't bother job hunting in the summer or around the holidays; no one is hiring.

The most qualified candidate has the best shot at the job.

Only certain components of a job offer are negotiable.

She debunks these using common sense, so just consider them debunked.

Note: not actually my kid.

The baby is pretty active. I suspect he can tell when I'm getting hungry, because shortly before I eat, without fail, he starts putting up a fuss. If this is how he acts in utero, I'm a little afraid of how he'll react once he's born and, you know, actually hungry.

Some babies are calm, and good at self-soothing. I suspect my son will be born without any chill.

I mean, just look at his parents.

Still, when he starts his bedtime agitation ("Mom? Why'd you stop moving, Mom?"), Chris gets to feel it. He'll talk to my belly, or poke it, or sometimes shine a flashlight at it (as far as I can tell, the baby hates that -- he always squirms away from the light).

Watching Chris play with, and just generally interact with, our son is already a great source of joy for me.
I always intend to do this at the beginning of the new year, and
every year the holidays throw me out of my posting momentum. So, since
my birthday was on Tuesday, why not kick off my personal new year
instead?

As of press time, the following posts have gotten the most all-time pageviews:

Part I of my review of Time Magazine's feature on happiness

My lament about not enjoying exercise

A (somewhat timely, I suppose) discussion of birthday cards

And my sadly out-of-date blog roll.

And the following post is the only one to have gotten more than two non-spam comments:

An introduction to my blog roll

Just for kicks, here are some unexpected search terms people have used to find this blog:

We've had three ultrasounds, now; one to confirm the pregnancy and two since.

I don't know if he had any opinions at the first one; I don't think he had brain waves at that point. Heartbeat, yolk sack, everything's where it's supposed to be and there's only one of him. Have a nice day.

At the second one, the idea was to get a look at his spine and, to a lesser degree, his face to make sure he doesn't have any major defects. And once we got to look at those things, he was confirmed to be healthy. But in the meantime, he crossed his legs, covered his face with his hands, and kept turning away from the scanner. "Go away!" he seemed to be saying.

After this ultrasound, but before the next one, we had a routine checkup. The doctor went to check his heartbeat, and then has this look on her face. She got very deliberately neutral. The "Something is wrong so I have to look like nothing is wrong" face.

Yeah, he was just dodging the wand. Once she tracked him down, his heartbeat was strong and healthy.

Then came the most recent ultrasound. This was the one where they would reveal the sex.

Many of our friends who have recently had, or will soon have, kids, found the sex through a blood test (did you know pregnant mothers have bits of their babies' DNA floating in their own blood? Science is awesome!). We just waited for the ultrasound. Even Chris, who is vehemently against spoilers, wanted to know.

So in the week or so leading up to the test, we talked to my bump. "You better cooperate with the doctor and the tech!" we told him. "We want to know who you are!"

(Well, we won't know that for a few months, yet, but at least this would determine his name.)

So the tech takes a look, and says, "Look! It's a boy!"

Yeah... she didn't need to tell us that. He wasn't subtle.

He was manspreading.

And just as soon as she announced it... his legs were crossed, his hands were over his face, and he was rolling away from the scanner. "I did what you asked, now leave me alone!"

And so it goes. At our last appointment, he let the PA check his heartbeat... then tried to kick the wand.

Immunizations are going to be an adventure, I just know it.

There's no way I'm going to be able to fill you in on everything, so I'll just fill you in on the big news that I actually not too long after the last Friday Review...

Chris and I are expecting our first child in July.

Before you ask, the smart-ass answer is, "I'm sure they will let us know their gender identity by the time they're two or so."

The precise answer is, "The fetus is anatomically male."

Yes, we have a name in mind. No, I won't be sharing on this blog. Chris has consented to being mentioned by name on this blog. Small Nyberg, as I'll be referring to him for now, clearly has not.

My first trimester kicked off with back-to-back colds, which segued nicely into morning sickness so bad you could put it in pill form and sell it as a weight-loss drug. I kept food down fine... when I could manage to eat it in the first place.

But I'm doing much better now, as our grocery bill can attest. You should have heard us a week or so ago:

Me: I need a snack, but we're out of everything.
Chris: Have some ice cream.
Me: I already killed that.
Chris: Fruit?
Me: All we have left is citrus. That won't end well.
Chris: We have chips.
Me: ...Yeah, not anymore we don't.
Chris: Cereal?
Me: I finished the milk this morning.

At which point he looked a little dismayed, because now he wanted a snack, too, and I had already eaten all of everything he had thought of (except the grapefruit, which would give me indigestion).

Also, the baby likes to screw with the doctor, but that's a story for another day.

But you don't care about any of that! Let's look at how the last week has been.

Last Friday was the second day of my temp job. It's supposed to be a two-week gig, which is about perfect, except they won't commit to an end date. I can work longer; I'd be happy to do so. But I really need to know what the story is so I can, you know, make and keep doctor's appointments.

Friday night was a comedy of errors in trying to get to Long Island for sushi with some of Chris's friends. This place had a pretty extensive menu of cooked sushi, which was amazing once I finally got there. Oh, I miss real sushi. We went bowling, where I did surprisingly well. I guess the baby is a good bowler already.

Saturday we mostly ran errands and relaxed. We got some nice steaks for dinner.

Sunday was Easter. We met up with Chris's family at a restaurant, which would have been nice had our table not been next to one full of screaming children. I was overwhelmed and overstimulated pretty quickly. Also, Chris's grandfather had passed away on Palm Sunday, which cast an odd tint on things. Not sad, exactly. Just odd.

Tuesday I had a doctor's appointment. The baby tried to kick the PA when she measured his heartbeat. Like I said, he likes to screw with doctors. Chris found the whole thing hilarious.

All in all, a fairly uneventful week. Tiring, though.

Not much knitting this week. I am far from the only person in my circle of friends expecting this spring, so I spent a decent chunk of the winter churning out booties. I'm still a little burnt out, not to mention out of the yarn I need. I'll make a pair for Small Nyberg once I replenish. I should probably pick at a hat in the meantime, but meh.

As for reading, I finished The Happiest Baby on the Block (which will hopefully prove helpful -- I expect Small Nyberg will be born without any chill) and worked on Storm Front for book club, as well as The Seventh Bride.

So what have you been up to?

Note: Crap, I just realized as I was preparing the draft for this post that it's scheduled for April 1. The news about the baby is NOT an April Fool's gag. That said, I don't expect you to believe me -- I wouldn't -- so feel free to remain skeptical until future blog posts confirm the news.

Updated 5/6/16 to add links and fix typos.

And there's a real nice point that comes most evenings when my FitBit buzzes on my wrist.

That buzzing means I hit 10,000 steps for the day.

Yeah, sometimes it includes a run I forced myself to take.

But sometimes it's running errands, or wandering around the park, or just decided to walk to church instead of driving, or walk to the slightly further bar.

If I can get myself out of the house, I've got a good chance of hitting it.

It's a pleasant moment. Maybe I should even up my goal?

Your Job Search: The Most Important Elements of a Job Search.

Let's see if I can't simplify this a little. Said elements are:

Your Resume. Be sure to have both an Internet version and a hard copy version. I personally have a "master" resume that has everything, ever, plus a bank of keywords; I then edit it down to one-to-two pages for specific jobs.

Networking. The only people I know of who like networking don't even like networking; they like free cocktails and passed hors d'oeuvres and possibly showing off to one or two specific people. But basically, real networking is just keeping in touch with people and making sure you can offer them what they need so they're eager to do the same for you. I watched your dog while you were at the funeral, so you came to my fundraiser, where you met your future partner, who introduced me to my future client. That's not so hard!

Answering Internet or Newspaper Ads. Meh. Even the book says you're better off going right to the websites of companies you like and looking at their Careers pages.

Contingency and Search Firms. The book says these are mostly for high-end jobs, but I've gotten several low-to-mid-range jobs though these companies. They're given a position by their client, then comb the major job sites for likely candidates (see "Resume" and "bank of keywords").

Interviewing. Nothing new here.

Follow-up. Write thank you notes! Emails are fine! (I try to send a quick email right away and more formal notes by the next morning). You stand out, and it's a really positive way to remind your interviewer that they saw you.

Now, yes, a lot of the residents sure seemed like they came out for the concert and never went home. But that's fun, too.

What was really satisfying was that we started our Christmas shopping. Yes, it was technically too early, but as we wandered the strange little shops, small items kept jumping out at me. Person A would love this! they'd say. Person B would love that. Sometimes I'd make a note. Other times, I'd make a purchase.

Heck. It spreads out the costs so our credit card doesn't take a hit come December. That alone makes me a little happier.

Not to rush you, but do you have any fun holiday plans yet?

Your Job Search: You Must Make Decisions and Take Action

If you feel stuck, make the decision or take the action anyway; it's the best way to get unstuck.

...Yeah, because it's totally that easy.

But it helps to understand our motivations. Why are you doing this or that?

10/1/15: Three Good Things

I have a Fitbit! I was paying a credit card I only still have because it's my oldest (as soon as my credit history allows, I'm closing it) , and saw that I have a ridiculous number of points. Now, the points are only good in the offiial "store" -- I can't get cash back or miles or really much of anything. I think I got a CD once, and by that I mean a Compact Disk, not a Certificate of Deposit (although, given the current interest rates, one's about a useful as the other...). Anyway! Seeing my ridiculous amount of points, I thought I'd skim the "store" and see what thy had -- and they had some fairly high-end fitness trackers. A little research later, and I have a Fitbit Charge HR. This didn't happen today, but I just happened to find it useful today, so I thought I'd mention it. This happened because I managed to combine two whims (get a fitness bracelet; check out my rewards points) into something useful.

It's raining! Again, this didn't start today, but it's just so nice. It's cool, and it's sucking the humidity out of the air, and it's just a pleasant fall rainstorm. I'm trying not to be pessimistic and think about how this is probably the first salvo of a hurricane (you'll know the result of that before this goes live), so let's just enjoy it while it's good.

Tea. I'm just enjoying a nice pot of tea. I bought some tea, but not a tin for it, so I'm trying to finish off a tin that's nearly empty so I can reuse it. Also, I just like tea.

I want to enjoy nature. Look at the flowers, the animals, the waterfalls, the vistas. The physical strenuousness is a price I choose to pay for that, and if the price is too high -- if I'm too tired, or in pain, or worried about losing my footing to enjoy what's around me -- then I'm not interested.

Chris is there for the challenge. He wants to conquer the mountain; that saps all the fun out of it for me. If we're conquering, we're not appreciating.

Yes, there's probably a sociopolitical metaphor there. No, I don't feel like untangling it right now.

For our anniversary trip [link to friday 10/2], we started by hiking the Kaaterskill Falls. We couldn't do the whole trail; it's being renovated for safety reasons. And the falls themselves were pretty weak, given how dry it had been.

But as a result, we could climb on boulders all the way out to the base of the falls. And we could just take in the beauty of nature.

Is it any wonder an entire arts movement was formed around this region?

Three Good Things, 9/29/15:

An English muffin for breakfast. I don't buy them often, because they're kind of expensive, but a few weeks ago, they were buy one, get two free, so of course I bought three packages and froze two of them. I don't know why, but they're so much more satisfying than toast. This was caused by the willingness to jump on an opportunity when I saw it.

Pulling the trigger on my dad's birthday present. For a long list of reasons I'm not getting into here, this was a frustrating task. And as things stand now, it still won't arrive in time. But I did it. This was caused by my recognizing the situation and being willing to organize all those involved.

The Adventure Zone. This podcast never fails to make me laugh, and I finally got to start listening to the latest episode. I really recommend it. This was caused by me recognizing the need for a laugh and the desire to catch up.

Your Job Search: Have a Focused and Flexible Plan with Realistic, Achievable Goals

This is really straightforward: your plan should be made of action steps. The job search is overwhelming, but if we break it down into smaller chunks, it's doable. For example, here are some chunks for me:

Update resume, consolidating freelance work into a single item.

Create a CV encompassing all my freelance work (and possibly some of my published writer).

Make a list of agencies and websites that should get my updated resume

Make a list of companies with freelance pools.

Contact at least one person off those lists every day.

Touch base with previous clients.

Update LinkedIn, including resume, CV, and links to blog.

Then, you just update your goals once a week to reflect your progress. Nice.

What smaller goals do you have?
This time, we're imaging the possibilities.

We start with a brainstorm journal. I kind of hate these; I'm not sure why. But I jotted down some things I enjoy.

Next, I have to... huh. Show my profile to a friend and have them come up with some ideas of types of work (not jobs, work) I might enjoy.

Well, folks, you know me decently well if you've been reading all along (especially since most of you are only reading this because you know me, let's be real...) and you got a good sense of my profile last time.

Throw some ideas at me in the comments (or on Facebook, if you're on a mobile device; you probably got here from Facebook anyway...).

Updated 3/29/16 to fix links, typos.

I've had the whole day to myself. I do most of the time, these days, but this was different.

First, I had very few obligations that day.

Second, I wasn't sitting around the house.

I don't that combination often when I'm by myself, and even less when I'm not traveling.

But that day, it was all me, no pressure.

I went to church, got some lunch, and then just meandered until I was tired.

It was a good day.

(Well, mostly, but you already read about that[link].)

So this article was posted to the Greater Good website in March of 2014, and was written by Juliana Breines. Go read it and then we'll chat.

So, we're both more connected than we've ever been, and lonelier than we've ever been, at the same time. That sounds about right, don't you think?

Online communication does help us feel connected, and can give us a chance to help people. It offers these opportunities especially to introverts, who don't necessarily have it in them to do these things face-to-face. Still, it's not the same as seeing someone's expression, or hearing someone's voice, or getting a hug. So understand your network's limitations, and strive to be actively engaged.

Professional networks and other acquaintances aren't deep friendships, but they're a wide and diverse pool that can help you find a job, or a doctor, or a closer friend. It's good to deepen these relationships, even a little -- even if they don't become true friends, they;ll be better, more friendly acquaintances.

Close friends are, well, close friends. We belong. We feel known. We become more empathetic. We can even become less racist! However, if a very close friend succeeds in an area we care about, we can get pretty threatened; I wonder if this is related on a psychological level to sibling rivalry? In any event, we should work on that, because our friends need our support in the good times just as mmuch as in the bad.

Significant others... we kind of discussed already, but they fall under the "friendship" umbrella as well. It's important not to be too insular with our SO's, or to put too much on them -- we need other friends, if only to spread the burden around.

(Did I just call being friends with me to a burden? ...I might have.)

And it goes both ways. Our partners need friends, too, and those friends aren't a threat to us.

Both week ties and strong ties are important, and we have to be careful not to overdo it -- or to overcompensate and cut off all ties when we need the support the most.

A chimpanzee brain at the Science Museum London (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

But that's OK, because they offer a similar activity.

So the first part is to identify work from your past that you still enjoy. I think this would be a lot easier for me if I had signed up using LinkedIn rather than Facebook, but oh, well. So I dug up an old copy of my resume (which I really need to update) and plugged in some choice terms.

Then I have to describe some dreams jobs, which is always fun.

OK, now it asks me:

Imagine walking into a party with six types of people there. Which group would you want to join first?

I'm skeptical, but as I read the descriptions, the types are more about what kinds of jobs those people do. OK, then. I then pick my second and third choices. I choose Artistic, Investigative, and Conventional.

Ah! The cards I've been waiting for. There are 33 choices of fields, and I have to choose at least four. I choose, to absolutely no one's surprise:

English Language

Communications and Media,

Fine Arts

Philosophy and Theology

If you picked more than four, you have to narrow them down, but since I picked exactly four, I'm good.

I guess the computer shuffles them, because I'm asked to pick one over another to gauge my preferences. Looks like Fine Arts is getting the boot.

Now it's asking me what skills I like to use. This really is starting to sound like the cards activity. I picked:

Repair

Construct

Imagine

Perceive Patterns

Shape, model, sculpt

Set up, assemble

Convey warmth and empathy

Speak

Follow through, get things done

Serve, care for, follow instructions faithfully

Help people link up or connect

Communicate well, in writing

Divert, amuse, entertain, perform, act

Pay attention to details

Design, use artistic abilities, be original

Use my brain

Research

Before you laugh, these are the one I enjoy, not the ones I'm good at.

Now I prioritize again, leaving me my top three favorite skills, again to no one's surprise, of Imagine, Communicate well, in writing, and Use my brain.

What skills do you enjoy using, even if they're not your strongest?

It was a lovely day, just cool enough to need a light sweater when the breeze came up off the wharf.

For about ten minutes or so, it was just quiet and peaceful. The sounds of the water and the birds, the feel of the fresh air and setting sun. Sitting on the beach for hours sounds like the most boring thing, but give me a destination and I will take the route that goes along the water.
So this article was published to the Greater Good website by Emily Nauman in August of 2014. Go ahead and read it.

It looks like the sort answer to the question "Does parenthood make you happy?" is "It depends." The marginally less-short answer is "It depends on the individual parents and the individual children."

Well. OK. Let's see if we can be any more specific at all.

Older parents tend to be happier than younger parents. Dads tend to be happier than moms. Parenting style seems to have an effect, but it's tough to say what it is. And parents with secure attachment styles before they have kids are better at maintaining their non-kid relationships upon becoming parent.

Chill kids have happier parents, while kids with serious problems can add a lot of stress to their parents' lives.

Age makes a difference. Parents of welcomed fetuses and brand-new newborns are really happy -- but their happiness plummets soon after, and doesn't pick up until the kid is 5, or 7... or moving out, depending which study you look at. The happiest parents? Grandparents. No pressure, right, Mom and Dad?

Social support makes parents happier. Employment is a mixed blessing: less financial stress, more time stress. And if you have goals of personal achievement other than having children, children aren't going to feel like as much of an achievement. Which... makes sense.

Married parents tend to be happier than single parents, and custodial parents tend to be happier than non-custodial parents.

Biological attachment to the children may or may not affect the parent's happiness.

Parents? How much of this rings true?

So, yeah, this is shameless self-promotion, and I really don't care! In October of this year, I was interviewed (full disclosure: I'm the blog editor, so I pretty much interviewed myself...) for the Newtown Literary Journal's blog. Why? Because a piece I wrote appeared in Issue #5, which you can still buy! So go read the interview, then if you want to buy the journal, that would be awesome, too!

This section is about how important it is to be friends with people who are different than you.

So, not only are things like racism and homophobia bad for our society, they're actually bad for our health, because if we're prejudiced against a group, we stress the eff out when we deal with people who are members of that group. And I don't know about you, but living in Queens, there's a good chance any given day that I could run into a member of literally any group.

But the more friends we have from outside our little bubbles, the less stressed out we are when faced with differences and novelty, and the more we actually seek it out. Diversity begets diversity begets healthier, happier lives.

So that's cool.
So what it comes down to is that most sigificant life changes will affect your happiness, for good or ill, in the short term, but in most cases -- with the exception of widowhood -- you bounce back to you prior happiness level.

The difference is, people who are unmarried tend to have a gradual decline in happiness as they age. People who are married do not.

So being married doesn't make you happy, but it an buffer you from a measure of unhappiness.

Does this ring true to you?

So we've talked about marriage and children [links]. Now, let's talk about friends. There's a video!

This is not that video, but I'm leaving it here anyway:

The actual video points out that we're wired to make friends when we're in new situations (doesn't mean we're necessarily that good at it, but I'm not good at a lot of these things, am I?). But even our non-human primate relatives find value in "non-kin alliances", which are shown to increase oxtocin and decrease cortisol. When we have friends, we know we have support, so we don't stress out as much.

Nice.
